SubEthaEdit 3.1 - Internet made easy03/14/08

This release concentrates on improving internet connectivity and usability.

By supporting automatic port mapping using UPNP and NAT-PMP, SubEthaEdit is now able to open a channel to the outside all by itself. No more complicated manual port setups to communicate over the internet!

Next, SubEthaEdit now supports inviting your iChat buddies to documents. Just drag and drop them to the appropriate and now more clearly indicated drop zones.

And last but certainly not last, SubEthaEdit 3.1 launches a new and exciting technology: Friendcasting

Quite often when collaborating there's the need to connect to a friend of a friend to work together. That's were Friendcasting comes in. If you are interested in your friend's current connections to other people, just click the little friendcasting button in your connection browser. You will now be able to connect to all of your friend's contacts and receive any new ones he adds to his list.

So if you work with Alice on a document and she tells you to join her in Bob's document, just enable Alice's friendcast and Bob will show up, ready for you to join. Of course, friendcasting can also be disabled for privacy's sake.

SubEthaEdit 2.505/23/06

TheCodingMonkeys today released SubEthaEdit 2.5, a significant update to its award-winning collaborative text editor for developers, web designers, schools and small businesses. SubEthaEdit 2.5 delivers 30+ new features and improvements focusing on automation and customization.

SubEthaEdit introduced modes for providing customized coloring, navigation and completion for all different kind of plain text files. For the first time, they enable users to extend SubEthaEdit with the functionality they need in their workflows. Modes can now add features complete with toolbar icons, context menus and keyboard shortcuts. In other words, SubEthaEdit just did become an AppleScript-powered swiss army knife® and it's still the only collaborative editor that makes working together not only possible but even fun.

New key features include:

  • Easy double-click mode installation
  • Broad AppleScriptability, automate text manipulation
  • Many new mode-specific features, such as close tags, execute scripts, etc.
  • Modes can be extended with features written in AppleScript
  • The toolbar is customizable for each mode
  • Opening and saving hidden files
  • Modes can be triggered by specific filenames or content
  • Assistance to avoid inconsistent line endings
  • Dock Icon Badge indicating invitations
SubEthaEdit 2.3 - New version, changed license02/06/06

This release changes the license under which we sell SubEthaEdit. We now require purchase of a license for all kinds of uses of the software. Of course all serials for 2.x are still valid for version 2.3.

SubEthaEdit started as a freetime student project available free of charge. Both, SubEthaEdit and its programmers have grown out of a university context. As developing and supporting an application professionally requires resources, we now take this step to complete SubEthaEdit's and TheCodingMonkeys' transition to a full time business. We are looking forward to push SubEthaEdit and other exciting projects to new grounds and hope that ultimately all our users benefit from the change.

As we recognize that there is a need for a freely available and easy to use collaborative editor, we still provide version 2.2 under the old license. Starting with version 2.3 new features will only be available for paying customers however.

Another thing that we changed is how we handle user-contributed localizations: Localizations that are contributed by the community can now be provided as separate downloads at our new Yahoo Group for SubEthaEdit. While this has the downside of not having everything neatly in one package, it provides some advantages such as speeding up the development cycle of SubEthaEdit and also the availability of localizations.

Having said that, here is what we are excited about to be able to bring to you for SubEthaEdit 2.3:

  • User Interface refresh (Unified Toolbar, Candybar Status Bars)
  • Quick access to Mode, Tabbing, Line Ending, File Encodings and Wrapping via popup menus in the Bottom Status Bar.
  • Quick scrolling to current cursor position by clicking position field in Upper Status Bar.
  • Quick access to "Go to Line" Panel by double clicking position field in Upper Status Bar.
  • Saving an associated CSS files now updates a HTML file's web preview.
  • New built-in Mode for .diff files and patches.
  • Holding shift while pressing a window's green button zooms to full screen.
  • Improved printing with dark backgrounds.
  • Various improvements of Internet Connection handling.
  • Various corrections and additions to built-in modes.

For a detailed list of all fixes and smaller additions, please consult our release notes. We are interested in your thoughts, please consider visiting our feedback page.
